The Feast

In pre-k we have been reading a book titled Feast For 10. The book is a counting book that tells the story of a family who cook together and host a feast for family and friends. The book was so popular with the class that we decided that we could cook and host our own feast. We planned our feast by making a web that detailed what we wanted to cook, ingredients, tools, and who would attend. After cooking all day we hosted a feast in our school's salon and invited various members of the school staff as well as our family.

En pre-kindergarten que hemos estado leyendo un libro titulado "Fiesta para 10". El libro es un libro para contar que cuenta la historia de una familia que cocinan juntos y organizar una fiesta para la familia y amigos. Bambini Creativi Studio

Pre-k invited 2nd grade to Ms. B's Bambini Creativi Studio last week. The 2nd grade kids had a blast working with the great materials at the studio.

Bambini Creativi is an Early Learning Educational Preschool that practices the Reggio Emilia Approach and believes in the great potential all children have, giving them every opportunity to explore and find new questions and discover new answers.

Block Play = Learning

The following information on the importance of block play comes from National Association of Young Children (NAEYC)

Socially -- Blocks encourage children to make friends and cooperate. Large block play may be a young child's first experience playing in a group, while small block play may encourage an older child to work with others in solving problems.

Physically -- When children reach for, pick up, stack, or fit blocks together, they build strength in their fingers and hands, and increase eye-hand coordination. Around two, children begin to figure out which shapes will fit where, and get a head start on understanding different perspectives -- skills that will help them to read maps and follow directions later on. Blocks help kindergarten and primary grade children develop skills in design, representation, balance and stability.

Intellectually -- Blocks help children learn across many academic subjects. Young children develop their vocabularies as they learn to describe sizes, shapes, and positions. Preschoolers and kindergarteners develop math skills by grouping, adding,
subtracting and eventually multiplying with blocks. Older children make early experiments with gravity, balance, and geometry

Creatively -- Blocks offer children the chance to make their own designs, and the satisfaction of creating structures that did not exist before. Beginning at the age of two, children may use a variety of blocks for pretend-play. Children may become life-sized actors in large block structures, or use figures to create dramas in miniature landscapes.
Children value their own block structures whether or not they represent specific things. Rather than asking a child, "What did you make?" say, "Tell me about what you made." This will encourage a dialog and offer the child new opportunities to explore.

Parachutes

At our Friday playdate with our friends in the primary grade, we worked together to move a giant parachute ball up in the air by using only the parachute. It took all of the kids working together to keep the ball in the air.

Looking For Sharks

I spottted Arthur in the trees today looking through a huge paper tube. When I asked him if I could join him in the tree, he told me, "Mr. Nick I am fishing and I looking for sharks." As I started to climb the tree Arthur stoppped me with his hand and said, "Mr. Nick your the shark." Classic Arthur

The Eiffel Tower

A couple of days ago I picked up a Eiffel Tower candle holder that I thought that the children would enjoy in the block area. The children immediately took to the tower and recreated their own Eiffel Tower with blocks.

Use your fingers?

In the art studio the children got to fingerpaint with Mr. Elrod our art instructor at SVN. The kids had a great time fingepainting and cleaning up. Parents I have sent some of the fingerpaintings home and some are displayed in the classroom.

Courtyard Fun

Sometimes we get very bored with the playground. When we get bored we pack up our things from inside and have a play date in the school's courtyard. It's a great way to freshen things up and give the children more room to explore the materials. (Pictures by Arthur Perez)

A veces se ponen muy aburrido con el patio de recreo. Cuando nos aburrimos empacamos nuestras cosas desde el interior y tiene una cita para jugar en el patio de la escuela. Ms. B and her magical tubes!

We have a new friend in Pre-K this year, Ms. Brianne Teevan. Ms. B is the creator of Kansas City's Bambini Creativi, an early learning project inspired by the Reggio Emilia Approach to teaching young children. Ms. B will be extending our learning's in the classroom by bringing new materials and ideas to the group. We will also be visiting Ms. B at her studio every other Friday. Empire State Of Mind

Something interesting happened the other day in the block area. I had recently developed some pictures of my trip to New York this summer and decided to see what would happen if I put the pictures in the block area. Within minutes the children were creating their own buildings and skyscrapers. I thought it was so cool that the children were able to see the beauty in the pictures and integrate it into their block play.

Algo interesante ocurrió el otro día en el área de bloques. Había desarrollado recientemente algunas fotos de mi viaje a Nueva York este verano y decidió ver qué pasaba si me pongo las fotos en el área de bloques. Mr. Nick I can get the Magazines?

This years class has made a stand against the phony black and white pictures that are usually found in math curriculum to use as cutouts. This classroom has made up their mind that they want the real deal, and the real deal is magazines. The children have really enjoyed identifying, sorting, and comparing pictures during our learning's about sorting, weight, shapes, and comparing. Also the constant use of scissors have really allowed me to get some great assessments on the children's fine motor development.

Sorting, Sorting, Sorting

I wanted to share a few pics of the children sorting We really hit this concept pretty hard as we sorted manipulative's, classroom items, outdoor items, everyday items, sang about sorting, read books about sorting, and sorted ourselves. My favorite activity was when we sorted all of the clothes from the lost and found box. It was cool to talk about the many different ways we could sort the lost and found. Parents next time you do laundry ask your child to sort the clothes, if they refuse tell them it is homework! -Mr. Nick

Lots of shapes in historic northeast!

During our shape learning's, we decided to take trip around the neighborhood to see if we could find different shapes. The children were very excited as they found out that shapes were everywhere. We were greeted by neighbors as they laughed at the kids yelling, "Mr. Nick I found a square." or " I found another shape, come take a picture". We enjoyed finding shapes and admiring the beauty of our neighborhood.

Durante nuestra forma de aprendizaje, hemos decidido tomar la vuelta al barrio para ver si podíamos encontrar formas diferentes. Los niños estaban muy emocionados, ya que descubrió que las formas estaban por todas partes. Obra Maestra

Encouraged by the art area that has been added to the classroom, Arthur decides to take advantage by painting a piece that he calls "The Forest". What I really enjoyed about Arthur's work is that he was patient enough to let the different colors of paint dry. Total work time was one hour and twenty minutes.

Workstations

Workstations are a daily occurance at SVN Pre-k. Workstations are areas around the room where the children can explore new concepts or extend their learnings on a subject. The workstations have objectives planned by the teacher but the learning is directed by the children. Parents ask your pre-k child what their favorite workstation is in the classroom.

Estaciones de trabajo se suceden a diario en SVN Pre-k. Estaciones de trabajo son las áreas alrededor de la sala donde los niños pueden explorar nuevos conceptos o ampliar sus aprendizajes sobre un tema. Mr. Nick's Summer Pics

Before we left for the summer I told the kids I would share some pictures with the kids about my trip to New York City. During the day I got the chance to learn reading instruction at Columbia University and at night I got to explore the city. The first picture is from Times Square and the picture with the Dino relics are from the Natural History Museum.

Antes de salir para el verano le dije a los chicos que iba a compartir algunas fotos con los niños acerca de mi viaje a Nueva York. Durante el día tuve la oportunidad de aprendizaje enseñanza de la lectura en la Universidad de Columbia y en la noche llegué a explorar la ciudad. Math Work

A couple of pictures showing the children creating their own more or less word problems. Parents remember at the first of the year when we were cheering for circles and lines from the kids, and now they are writing and drawing their own math problems. Great job kids!- Mr. Nick

Construction Update #7

This is a short video of Kathy Burke of Gastinger, Walker, Harden, Architects, visit to SVN Pre-k. Ms. Burke really extended the children's learning about architects, measuring, planning, and building. I think we have some future architects in the classroom!

Construction Update #6

Last week we used our learning about shapes and construction to create blueprints. To help us with our blueprints we called in the experts. On Tuesday our 7th and 8th grade friends, who recently won awards for their work in the Crayons to CAD program, helped us. The Crayons to CAD program launches students into understanding the built environment as they construct and plan their own structures. On Wednesday we got a visit from Kathy Burke, an architect from Gastinger, Walker, Harden Architects. Ms. Burke brought many examples of the work her firm has done and answered the kids questions about blueprints and her profession.

Male Teachers

This is a short video explaining the benefits of male teachers in early childhood classrooms. (birth-3rd grade). I think this is a great tool for future male teachers who are needed in the field of early childhood education.

Measuring Video

This is a short video I shot while the kids were exploring tape measures last week. I think that you can really see their excitement of measuring with tools.

Construction Update: 5

Today we explored blueprints as a group. We discussed the different shapes that an architect uses to create blueprints. Later in the day the kids used shapes to practice making their own blueprint.

Construction Update: 4

This week we began to turn our house area into a construction office and site. We went and visited Ms. King's and Mis. Izette's offices to see what we are going to need to put in our office. We also started to explore tape measures this week. The kids had a great time comparing how big things were using the tape measures.

Esta semana empezamos a dirigir nuestra casa en un área de oficina de construcción y el sitio. Fuimos y visitó la Sra. King y Mis.
